THE JBEL SAGHROU

THE JBEL SAGHROU marks the beginning of the Sahara desert, it lies between the High Atlas Mountains and the edge of the Sahara Desert, it is an extinct volcano situated in the south of the Atlas Mountains and Dades Gorges, full of very eroded sedimentary plateaus, Saghro is framed by small isolated farms. It’s inhabitants the A’t Atta move from season to season between the Saghrou region and the Atlas mountains to look for food for their animal herds. The best times of year to visit JbelSaghro is in the spring and fall, in the summer it gets scorching hot and there is no water to be found anywhere, in the spring there is the chance that you may find water trickling down from the melting snow in the High Atlas Mountains.

Day 1 : Arrival and transfer to the hotel in Marrakech.
Day 2 : Marrakech – Ait AISSI KALAA M’GOUNA.
After breakfast, transfer to Ait Youl, meeting with the mule team, loading of the equipment and then start of the trek. We will cross douars and villages from K. Mgouna until the foot of the Saghro chain. We leave the M’goun behind us and arrive in the heart of a volcanic landscape planted here and there with wormwood. Overnight in tents at Tidkit 1600 m. (6h30 walk).
Day 3 : Tidkit – Tizi N’Tagmout – Ait Ouzzine.
After breakfast, we go along the foot of the Afougahl Mountain. Then we go down into a valley planted with oleanders. This valley leads us to the Elmar plateau until the Tagmoute Col at 1890 m. The afternoon leads us to the Tin Ouayour Mountain in order to reach the Assakavillage .Overnight in tents at N’Ait Ouzzine 1600 meters. (6 hours walk).
Day 4 : N’Ait Ouzzine – Tifdassine.
We follow the Assaka valley and cross a succession of small villages: Tajlalacht, berkik, berkou. Herds of goats and sheep allow villagers to live decently. The arrival on the south side of Saghro is scheduled for late afternoon. Overnight in tents at Tifdassine. (6 hours 30 of walk).
Day 5 :Tifdassine – Igli.
We keep going east to the pass of Alhyabe. We cross ilhazzoue and then the TadaouteN’Tiblahe plateau. We have a magnificent view over volcanic landscape made of rocky peaks, basaltic conglomerates and tormented rocks. Overnight in tents at Igli 1600 meters. (7 hours walk).
Day 6 : Igli – Bab N’Ali.
We come up to Tissagdalte from where we will have a panoramic view of the Bab n’Ali conglomerate. We will leave the mules and continue with the vehicles towards N’KOB. Overnight in a guesthouse. (3 hours of walking and 1 hour 30 minutes by car).
Day 7 : N’kob – Ouarzazate or Marrakech.
Visit of N’kob. Way back to Ouarzazate or Marrakech by the Draa Valley. Overnight in an hotel.
Day 08 : Transfer to the Ouarzazate or Marrakesh airport.
